What causes TMJ?

A number of different problems can lead to TMJ, including:

  • Trauma
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Jaw muscle tension
  • Arthritis or other musculoskeletal disorders

In some cases, a combination of factors may lead to TMJ. The Alpha Omega Dental Center team uses state-of-the-art diagnostics to find the underlying issues and plan your treatment effectively.

How do you treat TMJ?

The four phases of TMJ treatment at Alpha Omega Dental Center are:

Phase I

Phase I is diagnosis. An hour is taken to review the history of your issue, and an additional hour is taken to collect the data to find the cause of your symptoms.  The diagnostic process may encompass: panoramic and complex motion tomography (CMT); T-Scan™ occlusal evaluation; BioTENS™; JT-3D™, a jaw tracker technology; electromyography (EMG); and joint vibration analysis.

Phase II

Phase II establishes the optimal position of your lower jaw for maximum joint and muscle comfort. Typically, you wear an orthotic appliance during the day, which relieves joint stress. You may undergo customized treatments including ultrasound, low-level laser, iontophoresis, and electrical muscle stimulation during this phase.

The Alpha Omega Dental Center team also recommends starting nutritional supplementation with Standard Process whole food supplements during this time. These supplements help your body get the building blocks it needs to undergo repair.  We may also recommend support of the endocannabinoid system for the stabilization of homeostasis of your body.

There is a separate oral appliance that is worn when sleeping.  It is designed in a manner to help maintain muscle relaxing during sleep.

Phase III

In phase III, you either slowly discontinue orthotic use or transition away from it through necessary restorative dentistry. You may need new orthodontics, new crowns, bonding, or other dental care to enable you to function without your orthotic if you are unable to wean off of it.  The night time appliance is typically worn indefinitely. In the most severe cases, you may need surgery to restore the joint, but that's typically not necessary if you seek care promptly.

Phase IV

In phase IV, the focus is maintaining your health and avoiding a TMJ relapse. That includes regularly scheduled dental care and keeping up with your healthy diet program to maintain optimal body-wide wellness.

The Alpha Omega Dental Center team designed the four-phase treatment to free you from TMJ disorder pain permanently. They’re ready to customize your care to get you out of pain now.
